E is for editorial

So... after a tense and intense couple of weeks, unit one of year two is finally handed in *WOOHOO!!*

In this unit we had a selection of briefs relating to different sectors of illustration, had to choose one. Of the options available (graphic novels, children's books etc) I chose "editorial" because I wanted to find the boundaries of my practise, and the variety and challenge that this posed were a great way of doing that.

As such, over the last 5-6 weeks i've undertaken briefs to replace the original images within five separate articles ranging from in The Guardian G2, to The Economist. Truth be told, i've surprised myself! I'll upload the images shortly, enjoy, and any feedback would be much appreciated!

Mexican Mavis

In keeping with my "make new work" vibe, for the last few days i've been indulging my urge to draw by working on a new series of images (possibly to be used as prints, greetings cards, or as a zine). Here's a sneaky peak:

Her name is Mexican Mavis (Mave for short!)and she's based on the Boy and Bear song of the same name.

Wares..

Within the next year we have two exhibitions with uni where we're expected to sell/show our work and wares. Having such a long summer break, I've challenged myself to get ahead of the game now by using this time to experiment and make some things while i'm relaxed and the pressure's off. I'm hoping if this plan works out well, by the time the sales roll around (at least the first one in December) I should have enough stock together -maybe with some spare!- to make the most of the opportunity, and perhaps even make a few pounds!!

With that in mind, here's what i've made in the last few days:

I really like them!

medium sized adventures..

wow... turns out blogging is a whole chunk of difficult when you forget your password!! Needless to say, problem solved :P.

That aside...... i am -STILL- currently working on my "mess" project.

So... i'm often inspired by the little things that crop up in my day, fall into my lap, hide in a bush and catch me by surprise....you get the gist! More often now i'm trying to use these as inspiration for illustrations, or at least to record them and keep them "on log" maybe to use at some other time, and who knows, maybe one day (or over the summer?!) I will collate them into a book. This is an idea which as I write it sounds more and more appealing, so let's see!

Anyway...with that in mind, and because i'm taking LOTS of photos right now, here is a run down of current medium sized adventures.....
