Lou Roll and The Tubes

In my unit assessment last week, I spoke with David Callow about ways to work with/ photograph bland objects like toilet roll tubes to make them look spectacular, and more valuable. Today I came across these characters by Itchy Animation. In my opinion, they're a little bit epic!

 

   

I made it to MADE.

(They should definitely sell t-shirts and totes with this on, or have mini craft sessions called "i made it at MADE")!

Anyway..I made it to MADE! 

So..like a 22 year-old child in a sweet shop, I shopped, got over-excited, and saw more beautiful things than my eyes knew what to do with!! 

I also spoke to, looked at, and -inevitably- bought work by some very kind and talented craftspeople, who made the experience sweeter still. So as promised, here is my personal run-down of some of my favourite work -and people- from Made 11. A BIG thank you to everyone who took the time to talk to me, and allowed me to take photos of their stalls. 

Angela Davies -

  ..a textile and book artist whose beautifully wrapped mini-book I still can't bring myself to open! Angela's work is very subtle, beautiful, and tactile featuring many delicate prints and fabric elements. Her "little books for little notes" bear a motif of a butterfly to symbolise the fragility and fleetingness of thoughts and memories -as with butterflies.

Cardigan-

..bright, quirky knitwears, and incredibly-made, funny crocheted pieces. These photos don't at all do justice to the quality and skill of the work, so PLEASE check her website too. As you can see I was rather taken by the scarf-wearing seagulls! Also see the site and Kate's twitter for further examples of work, and her original take on some classic British condiments.

Marion Brandis

..I've always had a lot of love for anyone with the patience and skill to make proper mosaics, and Marion Brandis does this BIG style! Her work adorns the walls,floors and benches of hospitals and public parks up and down the country, and you can see further examples of it via her website here.

Lara Sparks

..I also have a long-standing love of machine embroidery (and crockery, but more on that later!). For this reason, and for the fuzzy nostalgia her work produces, I love the work of Lara Sparks. For more perfectly balanced, and brilliantly detailed British-inspired work, take a look at her website.

Belen Gomez

..at some point in the future, I would LOVE to see my work on crockery, and looking as brilliant and natural there as these. Belen also has lovely illustrated greetings cards which can be purchased via her website. (And she sells under the name "Chalk and Cheese"..what a great name?!).

Made made MADE

  ..Speaking of craft events, in the next few months i'm going to be  involved in a couple of local events, and possibly be exhibiting my work in a few low-key and local places. This is both exciting and terrifying but i'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it!


    In preparation for this, on Friday I am going to the Brighton Corn Exchange (which is exciting in itself!)to see the Made in Brighton craft show.(Check out their blog here). I'm really excited about the opportunity to network, share ideas, and see how other crafters deal with logistics such as stall layout and self promotion. Hopefully i'll come away from the experience with some beautiful crafts, useful photos, a stash of new business cards, some more ideas, inspiration and know-how, and new contacts!

it's been a long time I know... far too long.. I am very sorry! Nonetheless (fun three-words-in-one-actual-wordness!!)

1)a nice lady bought my mum a book called "You Are Special" by Nancy Goudie and it's FULL of pretty, continuous line-drawings by Charlotte Cooke. Check out her website via the link :o)


2) Charlotte Cooke has contributed to an AMAZING project called "They Draw and Cook" (good food + great illustration = WOOHOO!)

OCTOBER!!

Well well munchkins... October already!! In terms of blogging, lovely Katie summed it up best when she said: "SHAMEFUL SLACKING!!". 


Granted.... she wasn't talking about me, but I can somewhat adopt the sentiment :P (check out lovely Katie's lovely blog here to make us both feel better! :P).


However... partial slacking aside, i've had a pretty busy last few weeks, opening an Etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/ElouiseBee) making a Twitter account (@LoreleisBeehive) designing business cards, and crafting for Christmas!! (not to mention several adventures and a birthday!...photos soon). x  

The Hambledon

I found the BEST shop EVER in Winchester! It's called The Hambledon and sells vintage things, original letterpress prints, beautiful natural beauty products, a random pop-up shop (at the moment it's "Fairground" theme!) lomography cameras, really interesting books and loads of other amazing things.  

I bought myself some lovely treats :P 

Three of these were Bee Bars (chocolate!) in Dark chocolate with earl grey tea, milk chocolate with sea salt, and milk chocolate with orange and geranium! I like to think of it as inspiration food! :P

   

Winchester

Monday 20th June 

Today I travelled by train -which is always a treat to me - and went to Winchester on a sort of midi-adventure!

Winchester is beautiful, and fitted completely into the posh stereotype I had had of it beforehand... which made it all together a little bit splendid!

As with the Race For Life, I took my camera and collected source material for future work, whimsy, etc. It was a good day!

What i have been doing in the time since I last blogged....

By all intents and purposes, I have been "mentally blogging" for the last few months, but not got quite as far as the computer!! So here is what i've been up to- 


June 2nd- Trip to London
My original plan was to visit Love Is What You Want (Tracey Emin at the Hayward) plus a graduate summer show, but time not-permitting I visited the Hayward and explored Covent Garden instead. 


I came across this in the concrete multi-storey behind the Hayward. In the cold echoey shadows, it seemed so perfectly placed.   

  

On a chirpier note, there was also this giant STRAW sculpture, looking like some child-eating character from a Roald Dahl story...

  

...and a building that looked like a beehive!

 

 I also came across Hope and Greenwood -"purveyors of splendid confectionery"(!!)- and their lovely staff and delicious Rose Cremes in Covent Garden. yum yum.

the further adventures of Elouise Bee...

In the 3 or so weeks since last posting I have been adventuring, and somewhere along the line getting generally motivated and re-inspired.. woo yer! 

My work at the moment is a lot about interpretations and re-interpretations... a kind of visual brain-storming. I was thinking about it earliar, and I think they're like "visual homophones" (a homophone basically being several words that sound the same but are spelled differently -like where and wear). Well, that and a bunch of whimsy! (which is an incredible word!). Images to follow.

P.S. I have back-dated posts from the last 3 weeks so that it's easier to see what i've been doing, and when. Enjoy!

medium sized adventures..

wow... turns out blogging is a whole chunk of difficult when you forget your password!! Needless to say, problem solved :P. 

That aside...... i am -STILL- currently working on my "mess" project.

So... i'm often inspired by the little things that crop up in my day, fall into my lap, hide in a bush and catch me by surprise....you get the gist! More often now i'm trying to use these as inspiration for illustrations, or at least to record them and keep them "on log" maybe to use at some other time, and who knows, maybe one day (or over the summer?!) I will collate them into a book. This is an idea which as I write it sounds more and more appealing, so let's see! 

Anyway...with that in mind, and because i'm taking LOTS of photos right now, here is a run down of current medium sized adventures.....
